RE-1 Valley Schools are Preparing Each Student Today for Tomorrow!
Success of Students and New Programs: Going to Great

Congratulations to our graduating class of 2016!  As you enter the world of work, college, military or other training, we hope the years with Valley RE-1 School District served you well.  We thank your parents for sharing you with us, for the amount of time you were with us in Sterling or Caliche.  Parents and community members continuing with your involvement with the school district, we thank you for your ongoing trust in our district to provide an education for our children that nurtures critical thought, compassion, and creativity. These are truly the 21st century skills our country and world require, and these are the skills our teachers and staff value each and every day.

As we wrap up the year, we reflect on the accomplishments of our students and the staff who guide and inspire. Our students had another award winning year in the arts, academics, such as science and mathematics competitions at Northeast Junior College, Future Farmers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, and most of our athletic teams.  These honors and awards are the evidence that the hard work of our students, combined with the inspiration and talent of parents and staff creates the combination needed for our young people to become successful contributors to a democratic society.

I’ve referred in past columns to the Social Emotional Learning focus begun in the prior year.  The concept and word of the month for May is: “assertiveness” My guess is that our teachers chose this concept for May in part, to give inspiration to our graduates about planning for next steps.  I believe assertiveness comes from within and is best when motivated by a firm belief in following your internal moral compass.  Author Jane Addams, circa 1881, wrote: “To do what you are afraid to do is to guide your life by fear. How much better not to be afraid to do what you believe in doing!”

Have a wonderful summer. Our RE-1 Valley staff works through the summer as your school district family planning and creating improvements for the coming year to enhance learning opportunities for all students. Our mission:  Preparing Each Student Today for Tomorrow.
